Before we go to Drill 3, let’s review some techniques.

For Error ID questions, read the sentence and determine whether you spot an error. If you do spot an error, try to articulate that error to yourself to make sure you’re not basing your decision simply on sound. Check the other answers against the grammar rules you’ve learned, and if you’re still sure your original error is the correct answer, pick it.

If you don’t spot an error right off the bat on an Error ID question, check all answer choices against the grammar rules. Eliminate any choices that stand up to scrutiny until you find an error or until only (E) is left.

For Improving Sentences questions, read the sentence and ask the same question—do you spot an error? If you do, try to articulate it to yourself, and if you decide it violates one of the rules we’ve discussed, eliminate (A) and any answer choice that repeats the error. Compare the remaining answer choices, eliminating errors until you are down to one.

If you don’t spot an error immediately on an Improving Sentences question, move straight to comparing answer choices. The differences among the answer choices give you clues to what rules are being tested, and you can eliminate answers based on the rules you’ve learned. Repeat until only one answer choice is left.
